Canada Jay Mathematical Competition (CJMC) is our newest Canadian math competition open to students in grades K-8, with questions based primarily on grade 5-8 curriculum. This competition has been created by mathematicians from across Canada. It was renamed in 2022 from the original name Canadian Mathematical Gray Jay Competition (CMGC) to match the renaming of the Canada Jay bird.
The problems are meant to be a fun fall activity for students and teachers to complement their math curriculum and build students’ problem solving skills. The CJMC offers engaging problems that allow for discussion after the competition and get students excited about math. The competition has 15 questions which take place over 90 minutes. It consists of 3 blocks of 5 questions with an increasing level of difficulty from beginning to end.
The CJMC is based on the grade 5-8 curriculum in Canada, but is open to students in all locations, at all grade levels. There are no grade eligibility requirements for the CJMC. However, the competition is aimed at grades 5-8. Any grade can write the competition but students in grades 9 and above are considered unofficial. Students in grades 8 and below are official if all other eligibility criteria are met.

Can my child write this contest with Spirit of Math if they are not a current Spirit of Math student?
No, only Spirit of Math students are eligible to write at our location.
My child's day school also offer this contest, who should I register with?
You have to register with your school.
I don't yet know whether my child's day school offers this contest or not. Can I register now and ask for a refund later if his/her day school does offer?
Unfortunately, the registration fee is non-refundable. However, your child may only write the contest ONCE.
Can I sign my child up for contests that are above their current grade school grade level?
Yes. However, you cannot sign up for lower grade contests.
