The Grade 2 curriculum introduces numerous English concepts with weekly 1.5-hour classes. Students are first introduced to the foundations of grammar, and by the end of Grade 2 can identify all nine parts of speech, as well as the basic parts of a sentence. Creative expression is also a critical part of the curriculum. Students learn how to write short stories with proper structure, identify and write a variety of types of poems, write in the style of famous authors, present an engaging speech, write a thank you note, and memorize and present famous poems. Students also engage with a shared reading and a novel study, which includes both independent work and group discussions. Finally, students master editing and spelling skills through weekly Treasure Hunt activities, guided editing on their written work, spelling/punctuation drills, and activities covering synonyms and homophones.
